The PLAZA INN Graz City stands on the Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Straße, the wide arterial axis running south from Jakominiplatz towards Liebenau. The house lies south of the Gürtel, within sight of the trade fair grounds. Despite the name, this is not a city-centre location: more than a kilometre of city lies between here and the Hauptplatz.

And it is not the only house of this chain in Graz. The PLAZA INN Graz Messe stands a good stretch further south, less than ten minutes on foot from here — two addresses in the same south, whose names do not reveal which is which. Of the two, this one is the closer to town. Anyone booking by name should compare the streets.

Day to day the transport connection is the clear plus, and more markedly so than at most houses in this guide. The Jakominigürtel stop is right on the street, with Stadthalle, Steyrergasse and Josefkirche following in the radius — practically every line is reachable from here without going into the centre first. Everyday supply is good as well: Spar, Hofer and several Billa branches are within walking distance, plus a row of restaurants serving Thai, Indonesian and regional food and several cafés. The Messepark begins right behind the house, and the Ökopark Fekonja and the Ortweinplatz are in the radius too.

Among the houses on the southern edge of town that is the decisive difference: this is the least peripheral of them. There are considerably more stops in the radius than at the sister house further south, and for eating there is close to a dozen addresses to choose from rather than a handful. For travellers by car the hotel garage has a quirk worth knowing before you set off: it can only be entered heading into town. The details are a line of their own further down.

What stays thin here is the evening in the narrower sense: there are practically no bars in the closer surroundings, and the sights only start further north towards the centre. If you want to go out in the evening you take the tram — here that is not a makeshift but the normal way.

This suits trade fair visitors, travellers by car, stays with appointments right across the city, and price-conscious guests who use public transport as a matter of course. It does not suit a city break on foot, travellers who want to stay in the neighbourhood in the evening, or noise-sensitive guests — the house stands immediately on a multi-lane main road, and a tram track runs just as close. What the estimate describes is the street — how well the house shuts it out is set out beside it in the guest finding, and that comes out friendlier here. The guide price is 65 to 95 euros a night.
