Messe and Stadthalle: where to sleep for them
Anyone holding a ticket for the Messe Graz, the city’s exhibition centre, or for the Stadthalle beside it usually looks for the nearest bed first. For a one-day visit that is right. For anything longer it is almost always wrong — because the journey there happens twice, and the evening happens every day.

Do not confuse them: the Messe and the Stadthalle share one site, which is why they share one page. The Helmut-List-Halle, a concert hall in the Lend district, does not: it stands a good hour’s walk away, and different houses are the right ones there. For the Stadion Graz-Liebenau the order turns over as well — the house that is a couple of minutes from the exhibition grounds is a quarter of an hour from the stadium.
The map above shows exactly the houses discussed on this page. The two marked points are the tram stops at either end of the site; the list beside it is sorted by walking time to them, not by our overall rating — that stands at the right of each row and does not change with it. Clicking a house counts what lies around it within the walking time you have set. The difference between being near the exhibition grounds and being near the city is therefore no longer asserted, it can be counted.
One site, two entrances
Messe Graz and Stadthalle Graz stand on the same grounds in the south-east, in the Jakomini district, on the axis of Conrad-von-Hötzendorf-Straße and Fröhlichgasse. Their two tram stops are not two hundred metres apart; from one entrance to the other you walk across the square.
For choosing a hotel that means: there is nothing to tell apart here. We have calculated the walking times to both stops for every house in this guide — the order comes out practically the same, at most the top two swap places, and only by a couple of minutes. This page therefore treats the Messe and the Stadthalle as one place with two entrances, and the map above measures to whichever is nearer.
From the Hauptplatz it is about half an hour on foot. That is the figure this turns on: the site is not within walking distance of the old town, but it is not out in the middle of nowhere either. It hangs on the tram — and in Graz the tram is the means of transport everything else is measured against.
Two places that are regularly confused with it lie somewhere else entirely. The Helmut-List-Halle stands in the north-west, in the Lend district — over an hour from here on foot. The Stadion Graz-Liebenau lies further to the south-east on the edge of the city, another quarter of an hour beyond the exhibition grounds. Both have a page of their own: Helmut-List-Halle and Stadion Graz-Liebenau. If you hold a ticket, read the venue printed on it before looking for a hotel “at the Messe”.

Despite the name, also close to the grounds and right at a tram stop. “City” says nothing about the location here. Its own underground car park, not bookable; the approach from the Schönaugürtel works inbound only, so anyone coming from the south drives one loop around.

About a quarter of an hour from the site and distinctly closer to the city with it. Within a ten-minute radius there are a dozen or so bars and several times as many restaurants as around the houses on the grounds, plus the Augarten park itself. Just under a quarter of an hour from the site and therefore closer than the Motel One. That is also the only sum that works out for this house: it stands further out, towards the stadium, and within a ten-minute radius our place data counts a handful of restaurants and not a single bar. To the old town it is about three quarters of an hour on foot. Its own underground car park, chargeable; our quiet rating puts the spot in the mixed category, with the nearest main road under a hundred metres away. For a single exhibition day by car this works out; for a stay with evenings in it, it does not.

Just under twenty minutes from the site, closer than the Motel One, and already in the Innere Stadt, the old-town district: the Dietrichsteinplatz stop is outside the door, and the Jakominiplatz is a few minutes’ walk. Within a ten-minute radius there are several dozen bars and more restaurants again — that is the other side of the sum this page is about. Its own barrier-controlled garage, chargeable, with spaces for large vehicles too. The rooms have sound-insulating windows; guests recommend the garden side.

At the central interchange. The site is a few minutes’ ride away, the old town a walk. The difference from the grounds can be read off the map above: where the PLAZA INN Graz Messe has not a single bar within a ten-minute radius, here there are several dozen. No parking at the house; there is a discount for the underground car park in the building next door. The position on the square is loud, and guest reports name the tram as the reason.
The sum to do before you book
With exhibition hotels it is almost always the walk to the hall that gets optimised. For a one-day visit that is right, and for a stay of several days almost always wrong, because the rest of the time is distributed differently from how people assume.
A realistic exhibition day looks like this: out in the morning, back in the evening — one trip in each direction. The evening after it is open, and it lasts longer than both trips together. Anyone who saves ten minutes of walking to the hall and in exchange moves into an area where nothing is open once the halls close has made a bad trade.
Optimise the evening, not the journey there. The tram deals with the journey there in a few minutes. It does not deal with the evening.
In practice: for a day visit the house closest to the grounds, from two nights on the Jakominiplatz or the Augarten and Schönaugasse area.
Who the location on the grounds suits
Yes, if:
- You have a single exhibition day and have to be there early.
- You are coming by car. The houses on the grounds have their own underground car parks and stand on wide axes — unlike the old-town houses behind the pedestrian zone.
- You want somewhere functional and cheap, and the evening plays no part.
Probably not, if:
- You are staying two nights or more and want to do something in the evening. The ten-minute radius on the grounds is among the thinnest of any house on this page — the map above counts it out, category by category.
- You want to see the city. The Hauptplatz is about half an hour away on foot, so that means the tram twice a day.
- You are looking for quiet. The houses stand on an arterial road, and guest reports praise the windows — which, put that plainly, is rarely a compliment to the surroundings.
Getting there and parking
The tram beats the car — for this site even more clearly than elsewhere in Graz. The Jakominiplatz is the central interchange; several lines run from there to the south and south-east towards the Messe and the Stadthalle, and the ride takes a few minutes. Which line currently takes which route is with Holding Graz: the routings have been changed several times in recent years, and a number written down here might be wrong in two years.
If you are driving anyway: there is a public underground car park on the Fröhlichgasse by the grounds, and on big exhibition days it fills early. We deliberately do not quote rates here — they change, and an out-of-date figure is worse than none.
Part of the surrounding area lies in the Green Zone. The difference from the Blue Zone is the only thing that matters here: the Green Zone has no maximum stay and is free of charge on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays — which is exactly when many exhibition weekends fall. When to book
Graz has a modest stock of beds; a big exhibition weekend moves prices across the whole city centre, not only around the grounds. The Grazer Herbstmesse 2026 runs from 1 to 4 October, with around 70,000 visitors expected, and so falls in the same fortnight as the steirischer herbst festival, the Graz Marathon on 11 October and the start of term at the Universität Graz. Aufsteirern on 19 and 20 September fills the old town rather than the grounds — the beds are the same ones all the same. The Häuslbauermesse traditionally falls at the end of January; please check its exact dates with the organiser.
Anyone whose dates fall in those windows books early — and books the houses on the grounds first, because they are the smallest selection. Anyone with flexibility is better off moving the weekend than the location.
