Helmut-List-Halle: why you sleep by the station for it
The Helmut-List-Halle, a concert hall in the north-west of Graz, has nothing in common with the Messe Graz except its operator. It stands in the Lend district at a tram stop of its own — over an hour on foot from the exhibition grounds. That is why this page exists: the booking mistake “a hotel at the Messe” is made reliably every year, and it only comes to light on the day of the event.

Do not confuse them: the Helmut-List-Halle is not the Messe Graz. A good hour’s walk right across the city lies between the two. If you are heading for the Messe or the Stadthalle, the houses that suit are listed there — and they are different ones.

Where the hall stands
North-west, the Lend district, at the tram stop Dreierschützengasse/Helmut-List-Halle. The stop carries the name of the hall — which saves you hunting for it when you get off, and is the only direction anyone really needs.
The distances, all worked out from the same model: from the Hauptbahnhof it is about a quarter of an hour on foot. From the Hauptplatz a good half hour. From the exhibition grounds over an hour. That last figure is what this page is actually about.
From it follows a rule of thumb shorter than any hotel description: Helmut-List-Halle → sleep in the west, around the Hauptbahnhof. For the other direction — the Messe and the Stadthalle in the south-east — the opposite applies; the houses for that are under Messe and Stadthalle.

In our model the nearest of the four to the hall, and the most distinctive of them in design terms. Its own garage, chargeable. A warning for drivers: on the Europaplatz the short-stay zone allows a maximum of one hour, the shortest limit in the city — enough to unload, not enough to leave the car.

Practically on the forecourt, the choice when the train leaves early. No parking at the house, but a public underground car park with direct lift access to the lobby; the approach runs via the Keplerstraße.

The cheapest entry point in our selection and, in our place data, the best supplied of the four at the same time: within a ten-minute radius it has the most cafés, bars and shops of them, and the Metahofpark is right next door. No parking at the house; the exit ticket for the underground car park on the Traungauergasse is handed out at reception, and the approach to the house is possible only via the Metahofgasse.

On the west side of the station, in our model barely further from the hall than the B&B and, after it, the second cheapest entry point in this guide. A limited number of spaces at the house, chargeable and not bookable. Two caveats that belong with it: guests report thin walls repeatedly, towards the street and towards the corridor alike, and our quiet rating puts this spot on the Gürtel in the lively category.
The order above is the order of walking time to the hall. It is tight: a few minutes’ walk separates the first house from the last, and the model carries more uncertainty than that. So anyone deciding on something other than the hall — price, quiet, parking — gives up practically nothing at this point.
What lies around the houses
The station area is excellent for transport and thin for eating and drinking. Both are true at once, and only one of them usually appears in the hotel description.
Within a ten-minute walking radius of the four houses our place data counts a dozen or so restaurants and bars each. In the centre it is well over a hundred. That is the real difference between this location and an old-town address — not the walking time you know from the booking portal.
For a concert evening that has no consequences: you eat in town before or afterwards and take the tram back. For a stay of several days it is the figure that counts. On the map above it can be counted out for each house separately; in the map panel the category is called “Bars”, and what is meant by it is bars and pubs, not restaurants.
Who the location suits
Yes, if:
- You are going to an event at the Helmut-List-Halle. That is the entire purpose of this page.
- You are arriving or leaving by train, especially on early or late connections.
- You have further appointments in the west of the city — FH Joanneum, Eggenberg.
- You want to stay cheaply. The lowest price band in this guide starts in this area, and the houses stand close together.
Probably not, if:
- You are planning two days of sightseeing. Then the location costs you two tram rides a day, or just under an hour on foot there and back.
- You want to be spontaneous in the evening. See above: the radius is thin, and once the shops shut the Annenstraße becomes markedly quieter.
- You are looking for quiet. Our quiet rating puts most of the station houses in the lively category. A station quarter is a station quarter.
Getting there and parking
From the Hauptbahnhof the hall is about a quarter of an hour away on foot, or a short tram ride to the stop of the same name. Which line that currently is stands with Holding Graz — the routings have been changed several times in recent years, and a number written down here might be wrong in two years.
The walk leads north-west out of the station quarter. Anyone walking back after an evening event should know that this area is not busy once the shops have shut; the tram is the pleasanter choice then.
We hold no data on parking spaces at the hall itself, and we therefore recommend none. Anyone arriving by car is better off leaving it at the hotel — all four houses have a settled arrangement, see above — and taking the tram for the last stretch. One advantage of this location that is rarely mentioned: the station area is the most straightforward corner of the city for drivers. Wide streets, direct approaches, no pedestrian zone in between.
When to book
The hall itself has no fixed season — it is used for concerts, festivals and corporate events, and what takes place when is with the organiser. What does exist is a Graz high season, and it hits the station houses just as hard as the rest of the city: at the beginning of October the Herbstmesse, the steirischer herbst festival, the Graz Marathon and the start of term at the university all fall in the same fortnight. The individual dates are under Messe Graz.
A second reason to book early applies only here: the selection is small. It comes down to a handful of houses within walking distance, and anyone who does not get one of them stays not a little further along, but on the other side of the city.
