Where to stay in Graz: the districts compared
Graz has three areas in which hotels stand, and they differ less in price than in character. Because the city is small, none of these choices is really wrong — you can walk from anywhere to anywhere. The evenings, though, are very different.

Innere Stadt — short distances, expensive, even
The historic centre, on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999. All seven houses lie a few minutes’ walk from the Hauptplatz, the main square, and — this is the real quality of the district — the surroundings are equally good everywhere. Wherever you end up in the Innere Stadt, well over a hundred restaurants and bars lie within a ten-minute walk. You cannot pick a bad address here.
You pay for that in the room rate and in noise: the old-town lanes are busy in the evening, and historic windows rarely insulate well.
Suits: two or three nights, a full programme, travelling without a car. Does not suit: long stays, early nights, arriving by car.

Lend & Gries — the district with the widest spread
West of the Mur, the river through Graz, and the most interesting of the three — because it takes in two entirely different areas.
Around the Lendplatz and the Mariahilferstraße stands the densest and most international choice of places to eat and drink in the city; the Kunsthaus Graz is here as well, which is to say the contemporary side of Graz. The Hotel Das Weitzer sits in the middle of it: well over a hundred restaurants and bars within a ten-minute walk. The Gasthof Lend-Platzl on the Lendplatz comes to about half of that — still more than any house by the station.
Around the Hauptbahnhof, the main station, only a quarter of an hour further west, it looks different: within the same ten-minute radius there is barely more than a dozen restaurants and bars. In exchange the prices are the lowest in the city.
Two addresses in the same district, a very different evening. That is why “Lend” on its own in a hotel description is not enough — it depends on the street. Details under Lend & Gries, the station location in particular under By the Hauptbahnhof.
Gries, to the south of it, is the cheapest and least polished part. If you want to eat inexpensively, this is where to be — see Eating out in Graz.
Jakomini & Geidorf — the range is enormous
The district with the largest gap between the best and the worst address in our whole selection.
At the top end is the Motel One on the Jakominiplatz: well over a hundred restaurants and bars within a ten-minute walk, a few minutes to the old town, budget price band. At the bottom end are the houses out towards the Messe and Liebenau, where the same radius leaves a handful — a few restaurants and bars instead of well over a hundred.
Both are legitimate decisions, but they are opposite ones. With a ticket for the Messe, the exhibition grounds, you need the location next to it. If you have come to look at Graz, you do not.
Geidorf in the north is the quietest of the three areas: the university quarter around the Zinzendorfgasse, a lot of green, the Stadtpark and the Botanischer Garten within reach. Out of term it is very quiet there — with the caveat that half the places to eat are shut as well.

When booking late in Graz is a bad idea
Two periods in the year are tight, and in both the prices rise across all three districts — not only where the event itself takes place:
- The first half of October 2026. The Grazer Herbstmesse (1–4 October, around 70,000 visitors), the steirischer herbst festival (24 September – 18 October), the Graz Marathon (11 October) and the start of term at the Universität Graz (1 October) all fall within the same two weeks. Immediately before them comes Aufsteirern on 19 and 20 September, with some 170,000 to 200,000 people in the old town.
- Advent from 20 November 2026, with around 16 markets and the heaviest crowds on the weekends before Christmas.
Between and after those, Graz is a quiet city with rooms to be had. All dates change — please check before booking.
The three questions that carry the decision
- How many nights? Up to three nights the centre is worth it, because a noticeable part of the day consists of getting about. From a week onwards the edge works out distinctly better.
- What do the evenings look like? If you go out, stay in Lend or in the old town. If you stay in after a long day, you can pay less — but you should then know that by the station and out at the Messe there is little within walking distance.
- Car or no car? With a car the outer locations are considerably simpler; in parts of the old town you cannot drive in at all.

What this comparison doesn’t know
It knows nothing about room quality, service, breakfast or beds. The price bands are researched guide values, not live rates. The rating “quiet” is estimated — derived from the distance to main roads and rails and from the density of places in the radius — because there is no freely usable noise data for Graz. And the place density comes from OpenStreetMap: what is missing there is missing here too.
