Stadion Graz-Liebenau: close by, or well connected

Do not confuse them: the stadium lies in the south-east, the exhibition grounds just under a quarter of an hour to the north-west of it. Both pages show largely the same houses — but in a different order, because the walking times reverse. The Helmut-List-Halle, a concert hall in the Lend district, lies somewhere else entirely, just under an hour and a half on foot.

Where the stadium stands

On the south-eastern edge of the city, in the Liebenau district, at a tram stop of its own. Since 1 March 2026 it has again carried the name Stadion Graz-Liebenau; before that it was named after a sponsor, and older directions still use the old name. Anyone searching for the old name ends up at the same address.

The distances from our model: from the Jakominiplatz about forty minutes on foot, from the Hauptplatz just under an hour. The exhibition grounds lie halfway, but they are not the same thing — from there it is another quarter of an hour. Anyone booking “a hotel at the Messe” is therefore not staying at the stadium; which houses stand there and why is under Messe and Stadthalle.

On foot, then, the stadium is not an option for anyone who is not staying next door anyway. The tram is: the stadium has a stop of its own, and the Jakominiplatz is the interchange you reach it from.

The nearest house

For a match day that is the right address. For a city break with a match in it, it is the wrong one — and those are not the same thing. That is precisely why more than one house stands on this page.

The alternatives on the tram axis

Anyone staying more than one night is better off where the tram to the stadium departs than where it arrives. The four houses below lie on the axis that runs from the Jakominiplatz to the south and south-east — the same direction the stadium lies in.

The sum for a match day

For a single match, closeness wins — and not because of the minutes saved on the way there. It wins because of the way back: at the final whistle everyone wants the same tram at the same time. Anyone who walks to their room avoids the one real bottleneck of the evening.

From the second night the sum turns over. The trip to the stadium happens twice, the evening happens every day — and around the stadium, by our place data, there is no evening, only a handful of restaurants. Anyone staying two nights trades half an hour saved against two evenings on which they ride into town anyway.

One match: as close as possible. A stay with a match in it: at the interchange.

Who the edge-of-city location suits

Yes, if:

• You are coming for a single match or a single event and leaving again the next day.
• You are arriving by car and do not want to move it again before you leave. On the edge of the city that is straightforward; in the centre it is the hardest question of the whole booking.
• You want to be back in your room on foot after the final whistle, without a timetable in your head.

Probably not, if:

• You are staying longer than one night and want to do something in the evening. The radius does not provide for it; the map above counts it out.
• You want to see Graz. From the stadium the old town is about three quarters of an hour away on foot — so you need the tram every day, and in both directions.
• You are travelling without a car and want to be spontaneous. On the edge of the city every decision hangs on the timetable.

Getting there and parking

The tram beats the car, on match days more clearly than otherwise. The stadium has a stop of its own; several lines run from the Jakominiplatz to the south and south-east. Which one currently takes which route is with Holding Graz — the routings have been changed several times in recent years, and a number written down here might be wrong in two years.

We hold no data on parking spaces at the stadium or on the arrangements in force on match days. That is with the organiser, and it is more up to date there than it could ever be here. What we do have is the parking situation at the houses: the Amedia, the Augarten and the two PLAZA INN houses have their own underground car parks; the Motel One has no parking at the house but a discount for the underground car park in the building next door.

For everything else the Graz ground rule applies: park once, then take the tram. Parts of the south lie in the Green Zone — it has no maximum stay and is free of charge on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, which is the decisive line for an evening fixture at the weekend. When to book

Match dates are often fixed only shortly beforehand and then change; they are with the club and the organiser, not here. What reliably puts pressure on the beds is the Graz high season — and it has nothing to do with the stadium: at the beginning of October the Herbstmesse, the steirischer herbst festival, the Graz Marathon and the start of term at the university all fall in the same fortnight. A big exhibition weekend moves prices across the whole city, the south included. The individual dates are under Messe Graz.

Anyone coming for a match therefore checks the city’s calendar first and the fixture list second. The selection near the stadium is small; if the date falls in an exhibition week on top of that, the sensible response is not to look further out, but to book earlier.
