Cheap in Graz, without living out of town

The map above shows exactly the houses this page is about — all those, and only those, that carry the tag budget in our data. The text below names the same houses and orders them by location, because in Graz that is the real difference: the price separates them less than what lies outside the door.

Graz is small. That has a consequence you do not get in larger cities: even the cheap locations are still within walking distance. The price gap between the most expensive and the cheapest usable address is considerable; the gap in walking time is a quarter of an hour.

Where the price falls in Graz

There are three price zones in the city, and they follow the geography fairly closely.

Cheapest: around the Hauptbahnhof. The Bahnhofgürtel and the Annenstraße, west of the Mur, the river through the city, carry the densest cluster of inexpensive houses. Here the researched guide values start at about 55 euros.

In the middle: the edges — Lend, northern Geidorf, Jakomini. Ten to twenty minutes to the old town, noticeably below the level of the centre.

Most expensive: the Innere Stadt. With two notable exceptions, see below.

For a trade-fair visit this is the obvious corner — what else lies out there is under By the Messe and the Stadthalle.

What the low price by the station actually costs

This is where it becomes interesting, and where our place data gets you further than any price list. For every house we count how many places to eat and drink, cafés, parks and stops lie within a ten-minute walking radius. The difference is bigger than the price difference suggests:

• Around the houses on the Bahnhofgürtel the ten-minute radius holds barely more than a dozen places to eat and drink in each case.
• Around the Motel One on the Jakominiplatz it is well over a hundred.

That is the real price of the cheap station location: not the quarter of an hour on foot, but the question of what is within walking distance at eight in the evening. If you eat in the old town every evening anyway, you pay that price in travel time. If you want to stay in the hotel after a long day, you pay it in choice.

Four ways to save money in Graz that have nothing to do with the room rate

1. Move the date. The first half of October 2026 is the most expensive time of the year: the Grazer Herbstmesse (1–4 October), the steirischer herbst festival (24 September – 18 October), the Graz Marathon (11 October) and the start of term at the Universität Graz (1 October) coincide. Aufsteirern on 19 and 20 September draws some 170,000 to 200,000 people into the old town. Advent from 20 November is the second expensive stretch.
2. Count breakfast separately. Two houses can be level on the room rate and well apart on the final bill if one of them charges breakfast separately. In Lend and Geidorf there are enough cafés to skip it — see Eating out in Graz.
3. Read the tourist tax. In Austria an overnight levy is added, which on some bookings only appears at the end. Whether it is inside the displayed price is in the small print — it is worth doing the sum.
4. Do not drive the car into the city. A hotel parking space costs money per night and in Graz is usually superfluous: the Green Zone is free of charge at weekends and on public holidays, and the tram replaces the car entirely.

What “cheap” does not mean in Graz

Not: far out. The city is so compact that even the cheapest location in our selection reaches the Hauptplatz in a good twenty minutes. In many larger cities that would pass as a good central location.

Not: badly connected. A good share of the cheap houses stands in the station band, and in transport terms that is the best-connected corner of the city. The rest sit on the tram — in Graz that is the same thing, only slower.

Not: no design. Several of the cheaper houses carry the design tag in our data as well; the two clearest are the Hotel Daniel on the Europaplatz and the Motel One on the Jakominiplatz, both of which are more consistent in their design than many a house in the upper third of the price range. But it does mean: less choice in the radius, and older building stock. Both are a real difference, and both are stated on the hotel page concerned.

What we advise against

The cheapest house in the most expensive week. When everything is full in October, the budget houses rise too — and then you pay centre prices for a station location. In weeks like that it is cheaper to take the better house straight away, or to move the date.

And price figures that sound too precise. Ours included: the price bands on this site are researched guide values, not live rates. They say which class a house plays in, not what it costs tonight.
