The Graz Christkindlmärkte, mapped

In Advent, Graz has around sixteen markets — Christkindlmärkte, as an Austrian Christmas market is called. That sounds like a lot and it is, but the quality that decides things is not the number, it is the density: nearly all of them stand on squares only a few minutes’ walk from one another. In Graz you do not have to pick a market. You walk round them.

This page sorts them by route rather than by popularity, because that is the question you actually have at seven in the evening.

The 2026 season opens from 20 November. The individual markets start and finish on different dates, and the opening hours differ from one weekday to the next. Both change every year — please check with the organiser before travelling rather than relying on figures from a website.

The three worth knowing

Christkindlmarkt am Hauptplatz. The big one. Christmas tree, avenue of lights, craft work, food, and the market runs on into the Schmiedgasse. It is full, it is loud, and it is exactly what you came for — but it is not the place where you stand in peace.

Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt am Franziskanerplatz. The oldest market in the city, a few steps from the Hauptplatz and still a different event: rural craft work, tree decorations, tin toys, small in scale. If you have come from the Hauptplatz and think you now know Advent in Graz, go in here as well.

Wonderlend am Mariahilferplatz. The only one of the three that does not stand in the old town but in Lend, on the other side of the Mur. A large tree in the middle of the square, stalls around it, live music on Saturdays, a children’s programme. In 2026 it runs until 23 December. The way there is the only one that is really a journey — around ten minutes from the Hauptplatz, across one of the Mur bridges.

That Lend of all districts runs its own Advent fits the place: the Kunsthaus is here too, and the city is more present-tense here and less historical. If you find the market on the Hauptplatz too smooth, you are more likely to find what you want here.

The distances, soberly counted

All figures follow our model: straight line times 1.3 at 4.5 km/h, not routed. In the old town that is usable, because the lanes are short anyway. For the walk over to Lend it is too optimistic, because the model knows no bridge and simply crosses the Mur — add three to five minutes here.

  • Hauptplatz to Franziskanerplatz: one to two minutes. Practically the same place.
  • Hauptplatz to Schlossbergplatz: a few minutes north, along the river.
  • Hauptplatz to Mariahilferplatz (Wonderlend): around ten minutes plus the detour to a bridge.
  • Hauptbahnhof to Hauptplatz: around twenty minutes on foot, or a few minutes by tram.

In Advent the tram is the better choice over the car, and not narrowly. The old town is pedestrian zone for the most part; what is left lies in the Blue Zone with a three-hour maximum. Details on that under Parking in Graz.

The evening we would suggest

Not a programme, just an order that works:

  1. Start early on the Franziskanerplatz, while there is still room.
  2. Along the Herrengasse and over the Hauptplatz to the big market as it gets dark — the avenue of lights needs darkness.
  3. On to the Schlossbergplatz, where it is cooler and less packed.
  4. Over the bridge to Lend for Wonderlend, to finish.

Anyone who has had enough punch by then walks it happily; anyone who has not takes the tram.

The mistake most people make is doing all of it on a Saturday evening. Advent in Graz is an entirely different event on a weekday — the same markets, half the people.

Along with the trade-fair season in October, Advent is the second phase in which Graz fills up. Book in December and you pay December prices. The comparison of all the districts is under Where to stay in Graz, the individual houses under Innere Stadt and Lend & Gries.

What Advent does to the prices

Graz has a manageable number of beds. The effect is that the Advent weekends — above all the two before Christmas — keep pace on price with the big trade-fair weeks in October. Midweek the difference is considerably smaller than at the weekend, and in the first week of Advent smaller than in the third.

If you are flexible, that gives you two usable levers: the day of the week and the week itself. Both work harder than the choice of district.

A third point concerns the journey in: at weekends the Green Zone is free of charge, and on Saturdays the Blue Zone only until 1 p.m. Anyone arriving by car for an Advent weekend should plan for that — details under Parking in Graz. Within the city the tram is the faster option in Advent in any case; the central interchange is the Jakominiplatz.

What runs before it

Advent is not the only reason to travel to Graz in late autumn. Klanglicht plays across the squares and façades of the city with light and sound installations from 23 October to 7 November 2026 — thematically the counterpart to Advent, only without the punch, and with far smaller crowds. Before that comes steirischer herbst, from 24 September to 18 October 2026.

If you want to see the city lit up without standing in a crowd, the end of October is the better opportunity than the middle of December. The same applies here: dates change, so check before booking.

What this page doesn’t know

Opening hours, stall lists and the exact number of markets change from year to year; we therefore name them deliberately only where they are documented. Our walking times are estimates from straight-line distance, not routes. And the map the markets end up on knows nothing about punch: it shows parks, places to eat, tram stops and sights from OpenStreetMap — 1,249 places in all — but not a seasonal stall that has been taken down again by January.

Frequently asked questions

When does Advent start in Graz in 2026?

The Graz Christmas markets open from 20 November 2026. The individual markets have different start and end dates — the one on the Mariahilferplatz, for instance, runs until 23 December. Check the exact dates and opening hours of each market before travelling; they are set afresh every year.

How many Christmas markets are there in Graz?

Around sixteen, spread across the squares of the old town and beyond. Because several of them are small and the line-up varies from year to year, the number shifts depending on how you count.

Can you do all the markets on foot?

The old-town markets, yes — they all lie within a few minutes of each other. Wonderlend on the Mariahilferplatz is on the other side of the Mur in Lend and needs a walk of around ten minutes from the Hauptplatz, over a bridge.

Which is the oldest Christmas market in Graz?

The Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt on the Franziskanerplatz. It is built around rural craft work and is markedly smaller than the market on the Hauptplatz.
