Hotels near Jakominiplatz: the second centre of Graz
Graz has two centres, and only one of them is in the guidebooks. The Hauptplatz is the historic one; Jakominiplatz is the practical one — the central tram interchange, where every line stops. Anyone spending a week in Graz on public transport measures their journeys from here, not from the town hall.

Shown are the six houses up to about eleven minutes — and all six are there, with none missing in between. The list rounds to whole minutes; the last two sit at roughly ten and a half.
The naming trap that catches almost everyone here
The square is named after the Jakomini district — and marks its edge, not its middle. Checked against the district boundaries of the City of Graz, only one of the six houses on this page actually stands in Jakomini: the Augarten Art Hotel on Schönaugasse. The others lie in Innere Stadt and in St. Leonhard.
That is not pedantry but the reason why searching for a “hotel in Jakomini” regularly misses: it returns the houses to the south towards the trade fair grounds, which are correctly inside the district but twenty minutes and more from the square. Anyone who means the square should search for the square — and that is what this page is for.
The same applies the other way round. Our own district page Jakomini & Geidorf is an editorial grouping, not an official one. It files Motel One under Jakomini although it officially stands in Innere Stadt. We have left it that way because the address reads Jakominiplatz 7 and anything else would confuse the reader more than the boundary does — but it should at least be written down somewhere.
The six houses, by walking time to the square
Every time here comes from the same model as everywhere on this site: straight-line distance × 1.3 ÷ 4.5 km/h — not routed, no traffic lights and no gradient, with two to three minutes of slack. On the short distances of this page that slack weighs more heavily than elsewhere: less than two minutes separate the second and the fourth house on this list.

Literally on the square. In the lower price band, with the tram outside the door and the old town a few minutes away. In our overall comparison, the house with the best ratio of price, location and surroundings — and at the same time the liveliest on this list. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the square.

A few minutes to the south-east. The only house on this list with its own garage and its own car park, both behind a barrier and suitable for larger vehicles. For anyone arriving by car this is the decisive difference here, because the rest of the quarter depends on underground garages.

Between the square and the cathedral. The densest cluster of places in this selection is within walking distance here, and the Hauptplatz is closer than Jakominiplatz. The house therefore sits exactly on the axis between the two centres.

In the densest cluster of bars and restaurants in the city. The most expensive house on this list and in exchange the most central: the Hauptplatz is under three minutes away. Jakominiplatz is a second, equally short walk in the other direction.

The only house on this page that officially lies in Jakomini. A member of Design Hotels, with the Augarten on the Mur outside the door, and the only one of the six in a quiet location by our estimate. That costs around ten minutes on foot to the square — or one stop.

Practically on the Hauptplatz and therefore at the other end of Herrengasse. The house with the highest price band here; it is on this list because ten minutes to the interchange still counts for public-transport travellers, not because it is a Jakominiplatz location.
What the location actually buys you
Jakominiplatz is not a beautiful square. It is a traffic area with island platforms, and nobody goes there for the view. Its value lies elsewhere: from here you reach the trade fair grounds, the Stadthalle, the stadium, the university, the main station and the Hilmteich without changing.
For a two-day city break that is beside the point — you walk anyway. For everything else it adds up: for a trade fair or a concert, in bad weather, with children, with luggage, and on any stay from about four days on where you want to see more than the old town.
The second advantage is the price. The houses at Jakominiplatz sit on average below those around the Hauptplatz at roughly the same walking time to it — Herrengasse connects the two squares along one short, continuous pedestrian axis.
And what it costs
Activity. Five of the six houses sit in lively or mixed locations by our estimate, and the two directly on the square have a tram track less than thirty metres away. The first tram runs early, the last runs late, and both pass the façade.
That is not a reason to rule the location out — it is a question to ask about the room. Light sleepers should ask for a courtyard side when booking; anyone who brings quiet as a criterion will find the alternative in the Augarten Art Hotel at the same walking distance, and thoroughly quiet locations are under hotels in Geidorf.

What “central” actually means in Graz counts walking minutes to the Hauptplatz — the right yardstick for everyone who experiences the city on foot.
