The Augarten Art Hotel stands in the Schönaugasse, in the northern part of Jakomini, between the edge of the city centre and the bank of the Mur. The quarter is late-nineteenth-century in character and quieter than the old town, but it is not purely residential: the Schönaugasse is a continuous connecting road, and the house stands on it.

Day to day this is a location with a self-contained neighbourhood of its own. The Augarten, one of the larger parks in the city and right on the river, is within walking distance, as are the Museum der Wahrnehmung and the children’s museum FRida & freD — together an unusually good offer for travellers with children. Tram stops lie in several directions within the radius, which puts Jakominiplatz and the old town a short ride away; on foot the walk into the centre is manageable, but it is not a hop. For eating there is a solid rather than overwhelming choice nearby, including regional and Thai cooking, plus supermarkets, and cafés and Irish pubs a little further out.

This suits travellers who want to be near the centre without living in the middle of it, families who want to reach a park and a children’s museum on foot, and longer self-catering stays. It does not suit guests who expect a wide choice on the doorstep in the evening — that lies further north — nor travellers on a tight schedule with a pure old-town programme, and only to a limited extent guests who need quiet, because the street outside carries traffic. The guide price is 95 to 160 euros a night.
