B&B Hotel Graz-Hbf — the Annenstraße location by the Metahofpark

The B&B Hotel Graz-Hbf stands at the western end of the Annenstraße, a few blocks east of the main station. The area is a station quarter in the ordinary sense: perimeter block development, a shopping street, a lot of through traffic and little in the way of grandeur. The old town lies at the other end of the same street, across the Mur, and from here it is no longer the neighbourhood but an outing.

Of the four houses in this guide around the station, this is the best supplied. Within the walking radius there are several supermarkets — Billa Plus, Hofer, two Spar branches — plus a Turkish, a Filipino and a Romanian grocer, a dozen cafés and patisseries, and a broad choice of restaurants from regional to Italian to Sri Lankan. Green space is better than first impressions suggest, too: the Metahofpark is just around the corner, the Josef-Huber-Park is close by, and even the Volksgarten is still within the radius. Trams run from the Hauptbahnhof stop and from Esperantoplatz.

What is conspicuously absent is evening life: the bars can be counted on one hand, and the nightlife happens a good way further east. And on quiet there is a catch that the map does not show — a tram track runs immediately past the house, closer than at any of the other three station addresses. The through road is a little further away than it is for the neighbours, which on balance makes this the quietest of the group, but not a quiet address.

This suits price-conscious travellers, overnight stops, late arrivals and early departures, and self-caterers. It does not suit a city break that lives on short walks into the old town, travellers who want to head out in the evening without a plan, or guests who cope badly with traffic or rail noise.
