The house stands on the Eggenberger Gürtel, the ring road that branches off at the main station and runs west towards Eggenberg. That puts it on the outer edge of the station quarter, on the side facing away from town: to the east the dense perimeter blocks towards the Annenstraße begin, to the west the city quickly becomes more spread out and more industrial. The house traded under a different name until recently, so signage and online listings may still differ.

On this guide’s own reckoning, this is the best placed of the three station addresses — ahead of the Hotel Daniel and well ahead of the Austria Trend Europa, both a few minutes walk away. The reason is not the location, which the three share almost entirely, but the price: this is the cheapest of the three and one of the cheapest houses in the guide. A small side effect of standing further west: of the three, this one has the longest walk to the station and the shortest into the old town.

In practice this is a functional address with a good connection. The main station is within walking distance, trams stop there as well as at Esperantoplatz and Köflacher Gasse, which puts the centre within reach without changing. Walking there, by contrast, means a long route right across the whole station quarter — the old town is not the neighbourhood here. Supply in the radius is solid: Billa Plus, Spar and Hofer, a Turkish and a Filipino grocer, around a dozen cafés and patisseries, and restaurants serving regional, Italian, Japanese and Sri Lankan food. The Metahofpark and the Josef-Huber-Park are the nearest green spaces.

This corner has one peculiarity that the neighbouring houses lack: a small cultural offer right in the quarter, from the infowelt Koralmbahn to a model railway club to a gallery. What stays thin, by contrast, is the evening — three bars in the radius, and after that it goes quiet. And the Gürtel itself runs immediately past the house; the railway line is within earshot as well.

The price advantage has a flip side, and it is not in the location. Of the three station houses this one sits closest to the arterial road — and several guests report that the rooms are poorly insulated both towards the street and towards the corridor. You can read it further down in the guest finding. The quiet estimate knows nothing of it: it calculates from the location, and walls are outside its reach.

This suits price-conscious travellers, arrivals by car, trade fair and business appointments, and short stopovers. It does not suit a city break that lives on walks into the old town, guests who want to do something in the evening without taking transport, or anyone sensitive to traffic noise. The guide price is 63 to 95 euros a night.
