The Gasthof Lend-Platzl stands directly on the Lendplatz, the market square at the centre of the Lend district, west of the Mur. Open the door and you are on the square. This is not a back yard and not a side lane but the central stage of a quarter that starts early with the market and ends late with the bars.

Day to day this means very short routes for everything ordinary and a deliberate distance from the old town. Supermarkets, bakers and market stalls are arranged around the square, as is a density of bars and neighbourhood taverns that is unusual for a residential quarter: close to a dozen cafés and around twenty restaurants and bars in the near radius, from regional cooking to Italian to Latin American. The way into the old town runs right across the quarter and over a bridge across the Mur — walkable, but not something you do casually in passing. The tram is not on the square but towards the river, at the Schloßbergbahn and at the Roseggerhaus; anyone travelling a lot by public transport loses a little time on every trip here.

This suits travellers who want to experience a quarter rather than merely view it, weekend stays with a visit to the market, and people who want to stay within a hundred metres in the evening. It does not suit guests who need quiet: a market square is loud early in the morning and busy late into the evening, and the house stands directly on a road that carries traffic. Nor does it suit anyone expecting the old town outside the door, and with a guide price of 120 to 140 euros a night it sits above the affordable part of this guide.
