The Hotel Mariahilf stands on the Mariahilferstraße in the Lend district, a few steps from the Kunsthaus and from the bank of the Mur. This is the western side of the river, but at its narrowest point: the old town begins just beyond the bridge. Around the house lies the stretch of Lend that has changed most visibly in recent years — the museum building, the riverside promenade, the restaurants and bars.

Day to day this is one of the shortest-distance locations in this guide. The Kunsthaus, the Murinsel and the Eisernes Haus are all in the immediate surroundings, trams stop at Südtiroler Platz and at the Stadtbibliothek, and the way into the old town is across the bridge. The density of restaurants and cafés all around is exceptionally high: Italian cooking, regional inns, ice cream parlours, patisseries and a whole row of bars, several of them literally next door to the entrance. Supermarkets and a chemist are in the radius as well, and the Spitalsgarten is the nearest green space.

That same density is also the drawback. The house stands in a nightlife quarter and close to a road that carries traffic — anyone expecting quiet at ten in the evening will not find it here. The location suits travellers who move on foot and on impulse, people interested in art and architecture, and short stays with a full programme. It does not suit guests who need quiet, families with a fixed evening rhythm, or anyone looking for a retreat rather than a starting point. The guide price is 75 to 140 euros a night.
