The Hotel Alter Telegraf stands on the Grabenstraße, north of the old town where Geidorf gives way to the northern districts. The Grabenstraße is an arterial road leading out of the city to the north, and the house stands immediately on it. The Schlossberg begins to the south with the city centre behind it — near enough to reach on foot, far enough not to belong to it.

Day to day this is a curiously divided location. For eating there is a decent choice of restaurants in the immediate surroundings — pizza, roast chicken, regional inns — plus a modest number of cafés. What is missing is bars: there are only a handful in the radius, and the evening only starts further towards the centre. Green space, on the other hand, is plentiful, with several parks and gardens in the radius and the northern slopes quickly within reach. The tram does not stop outside the door but a stretch closer to town, at Lange Gasse or at the Keplerbrücke. The walk into the old town runs along the Schlossberg; it is a clear walk, and no more than that.

This suits travellers with a car who want access without city-centre traffic, price-conscious stays, and anyone who spends the evening in the house or at the nearest inn. It does not suit guests looking for café and bar life outside the door, travellers who depend on the tram, or noise-sensitive guests: an arterial road carries traffic at night too. The guide price is 70 to 95 euros a night.
