Kai 36 stands on the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai, immediately next to the valley station of the Schlossbergbahn. The name describes the location precisely: on one side the rock of the Schlossberg rises, on the other the Mur flows past. Between them lies the Kai, an embankment road carrying through traffic, and behind that the old town begins.

In practice this is an address with very short routes in three directions. The Schlossberg is reachable from here without a detour, by funicular or on foot up the steps at the Schlossbergplatz; the Murinsel lies downstream within sight, the Kunsthaus just beyond it. The way into the old town runs across the Schlossbergplatz and along the Sackstraße towards the Hauptplatz — flat and short. Tram stops lie at the Schlossbergplatz and at the Keplerbrücke. There are many places to eat in the radius, among them Chinese, Indian and Latin American cooking, plus cafés along the riverbank and a large number of bars; green space is almost all on the hill and therefore uphill.

This suits travellers who want to combine views, river and old town in a short stay, and anyone who likes staying by the water. It does not suit guests who need quiet: the Kai and the Schlossbergplatz are busy during the day, and in the evening the going-out crowd arrives. Nor does it fit the price core of this guide — the guide price is 155 to 220 euros a night and thus clearly above the city’s budget houses.

The soundproofing is praised and keeps street noise largely out even in rooms facing the city. Individual guests with a room towards the street still found it loud at night. Ask for the far side.
