The PLAZA INN Graz Messe stands on the same arterial road as its sister house, but a good stretch further south — beyond the trade fair grounds, where Jakomini gives way to the suburban fabric of Liebenau. The surroundings are mixed: housing blocks, commercial premises, wide streets, little life at street level. From here the old town is no longer a walk but a ride.

Anyone booking by name should look twice. The same chain runs two houses in Graz, and both of them are in the south: the PLAZA INN Graz City, despite what its name suggests, is not a city-centre address either — it stands barely a quarter of an hour’s walk from here, a little closer to town. This house, in addition, used to be called something else; older online sources still list it under the old name. Three labels for two addresses on the same edge of town — that is enough to book the wrong one by accident.

In practice the basics are better covered than the edge-of-town position suggests. A Spar is a short walk away, with Billa and Hofer following; for eating there is a small but real choice right in the surroundings, including a Japanese restaurant and two places directly on the street. The tram stops at Fröhlichgasse/Messe close by, the Ostbahnhof is nearby as well, and the route via the Stadthalle leads towards Jakominiplatz. Green space is plentiful: the Ökopark Fekonja, the Schönaupark and the Messepark are all in the closer radius. What is genuinely missing here is the evening — there is not a single bar in the radius, only two cafés, and once the shops close nothing happens in this area.

Getting into town means the tram, not your feet. The Fröhlichgasse/Messe stop is right at the house, the line runs via the Stadthalle and the Jakominigürtel to Jakominiplatz, and from there it is the last few minutes into the old town. So the day here is planned around departures rather than around walking times. The advantage is that rain and gradient stop mattering; the drawback is that the way back late in the evening hangs on a timetable.

What this address is made for is right next door. No house in this guide lies closer to the trade fair grounds; the next one needs several times the walk. The Ostbahnhof, too, is a few minutes away — arriving by train from the south or the east you get off practically at the door, while the Hauptbahnhof sits at the far end of the city. For a day at the fair or an event at the Stadthalle this is the short way in, and elsewhere you pay considerably more for it.

The address is not a quiet one. It lies immediately on a main road and at the same time close to the railway line; among the houses in this guide that makes it one of the most heavily exposed, even though there is no city-centre bustle around it. Location and guest reports do part ways here, though. Both stand on this page and both are right — they answer two different questions: where the house is, and how well it is built.

This suits trade fair visitors, travellers by car, rail arrivals via the Ostbahnhof, and price-conscious overnight stays with nothing planned for the evening. It does not suit a city break, guests who want to stay in the neighbourhood after dark, or noise-sensitive travellers. The guide price is 70 to 100 euros a night.
