The Schlossberghotel stands on the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai, at the northern edge of the old town, where the Schlossberg meets the embankment road head on. Above the house lie the bastion grounds and the paths up to the clock tower, in front of it the Kai and behind that the Mur. It is an edge-of-centre location: to the south the old town begins at once, to the north the Kai runs on towards Lend.

In practice that means short routes in two quite different directions. The Schlossberg with the clock tower, the Stallbastei and the museum on the hill begins directly above — for a view you need to plan nothing here, only climb. The way into the old town runs along the riverbank or through the lanes towards the Hauptplatz, either of them straightforward. Trams stop at the Keplerbrücke and at the Schloßbergbahn. In the radius there are restaurants serving regional, Indian and Asian food, cafés and a good number of bars; supermarkets exist, but not outside the door.

The drawback is the road itself: the Kai is a through route, and the house stands on it. The location suits travellers who want views and old town in one, short stays with a sightseeing programme, and anyone happy to walk uphill. It does not suit noise-sensitive guests or travellers with limited mobility, and on price it does not fit the core niche of this guide: the guide price is 140 to 220 euros a night, clearly above the city’s affordable houses.
