The Grand Hôtel Wiesler stands on the Grieskai, that is, directly on the embankment road on the western bank of the Mur, in the Gries district. The old town lies opposite, visible but separated by the river and the Kai. The Kai is one of the city’s through routes — the house stands on a road that carries traffic, not in a lane.

What that means day to day: the way into the centre crosses one of the bridges over the Mur and is short enough to walk several times a day. The Kunsthaus with its striking dome lies downstream within walking distance. The Volksgarten, one of the larger green spaces in the west of the city, begins right next to the house; smaller grounds such as the Spitalsgarten, the Nikolaiplatz and the St.-Andrä-Platz are in the radius as well. On trams the location is strong: the Südtiroler Platz/Kunsthaus stop is practically outside the door, with Bad zur Sonne, Andreas-Hofer-Platz and the Schloßbergplatz a short walk further. Supply all around is dense: several supermarkets, among them international grocers, many cafés and restaurants from Asian to Middle Eastern, and a good number of bars.

This suits travellers who want to be central without living in the middle of the old-town bustle, and who prefer a view across the river to a lane. It does not suit guests who put quiet first — an embankment road remains an embankment road — nor anyone who mistakes Gries for the city centre: this is a quarter of its own with a character of its own, and west of the Kai the picture changes quickly. On price, too, the house falls outside the affordable part of this guide, with a guide price of 110 to 180 euros a night.
