The Hotel Gollner stands in the Schlögelgasse, on the southern edge of the city centre between the opera house and Dietrichsteinplatz. This is the seam where the old town stops and Jakomini begins: late-nineteenth-century residential blocks, commercial premises on the ground floor, wide streets. The city’s sights are no longer outside the door here — there are markedly fewer in the closer radius than at any other central house in this guide, and for this location that is unusual.

In return the everyday position is strong. The Dietrichsteinplatz interchange is just around the corner, along with the stops by the opera and at Jakominiplatz; practically every line runs from here. For eating, the choice in the immediate surroundings is large and unusually international: Greek, Asian, Italian, plus patisseries, coffee roasters and a row of bars. Supermarkets and smaller shops are in the same street. The walk into the old town heads north through the Herrengasse — a simple, straight route with no climb. Green space comes only in small portions; the Stadtpark lies further north.

This suits travellers who put transport links and a choice of food above scenery, longer stays, and business appointments in the south of the city. It does not suit guests who want to look out at the old town, travellers seeking quiet — the house stands immediately on a main road with a tram line — or anyone for whom green space within walking distance matters.
