The Boutique Hotel Dom stands in the Bürgergasse, in the eastern part of the Graz old town between the cathedral, the Burg and the foot of the Schlossberg. This is a different part of the centre from the Sackstraße or the Hauptplatz: narrower, older, mostly residential and official buildings rather than rows of shops. The climb up the Schlossberg begins at the Paulustor; in the other direction the Stadtpark opens up.

Day to day this is an unusual combination. The lane itself feels sheltered, but that is deceptive: a through road runs immediately alongside it, closer than at any other old-town house in this guide — if quiet is a condition for you, check which way the room faces before booking. Museums, galleries and sights stand shoulder to shoulder in the radius, as do a large number of restaurants, from regional cooking to Italian to international, plus cafés and long-established bakeries. What is missing is the connection: there is no tram stop in the immediate vicinity — the nearest are down at the Schlossbergplatz, at the Hauptplatz or by the opera house. A supermarket for daily needs, on the other hand, is within walking distance. Anyone who uses public transport a lot, or who depends on level ground, should factor in that the lanes towards the Schlossberg climb.

This suits travellers exploring the old town on foot, with museums and the Schlossberg on the programme, who want dinner nearby rather than loud. It does not suit guests who need a tram or bus outside the door, self-caterers with serious shopping to do, or anyone troubled by gradients and cobblestones.
