The Palais-Hotel Erzherzog Johann stands in the Sackstraße, the historic shopping street that runs north from the Hauptplatz towards the Schlossberg. The square itself is only a few steps away. All around stand the palaces and townhouses of the upper old town, and the street is largely pedestrian with delivery traffic.

Day to day this is the shortest of all walking locations. Tram stops at the Hauptplatz and the Schlossbergplatz are practically outside the door, which puts the whole city within reach without changing. Museums, the town hall and the ascents to the Schlossberg are neighbours rather than excursions. A supermarket, a chemist and a baker are right in the street — by no means a matter of course in an old town. The number of restaurants, cafés and bars in the radius is correspondingly large, from wine taverns and regional cooking through sushi to Irish pubs.

That is also exactly the objection. This address sits in the middle of the activity: delivery traffic early in the morning, streams of visitors during the day, the going-out crowd in the evening. The location suits short stays with a full programme, travellers without a car, and anyone who takes “central” literally. It does not suit guests who need quiet, drivers who want to park near the door, and on price it does not fit the affordable core of this guide: the guide price is 120 to 250 euros a night, the widest corridor in this selection.
