By car: parking and the Green Zone
Arriving in Graz by car means choosing a hotel on different grounds from arriving by train. Not because the city is hostile to cars, but because the most attractive settings are the ones least built for them: the old-town houses stand in lanes four hundred years older than the first motor car.

The map above shows exactly the houses discussed here — the ones you can reasonably drive to. The difficult old-town addresses in the last group below are deliberately not among them. The map shows neither parking spaces nor zones: there is no open data for the zone boundaries, and whether a house has a space of its own is on its hotel page under “Location & noise”.

The three questions to ask before booking
Booking sites shorten parking details to “parking available”. That can mean five different things. Ask in writing:
- Is the space at the house or in a public car park? The two are often several hundred metres apart, and you cover them with your luggage.
- Is it reserved or subject to availability? At a full house, “subject to availability” means: no.
- What does it cost per night, and is driving up to it allowed? Some addresses can only be reached with a permit or through a loading bay.
A fourth question arises only in Graz, but it arises regularly: which zone is the street in? If a house has no space of its own and stands in the Blue Zone, three hours is the maximum — useless for an overnight stay.
The settings, sorted by how easy they are to reach
Good: the area around the station
The houses on the Bahnhofgürtel, on the Europaplatz and on the Eggenberger Gürtel stand on main roads with direct access. Coming off the motorway, this is the least complicated corner of the city.

Europaplatz 1. Careful: on the Europaplatz in front of the Hauptbahnhof the short-stay parking zone allows a maximum stay of one hour — the shortest restriction in the city. Enough to unload, not enough to leave the car. Do not arrive here without a parking space settled.

Good: Jakomini and the south
Outside the historic core, on wide axes, partly in the Green Zone — and therefore without a maximum stay.

Both lie outside the dense core, both are straightforward to drive to, and both need a tram ride or a longer walk to reach the old town.
Difficult: the old-town addresses
Sackstraße, Bürgergasse, Landhausgasse, Karmeliterplatz — here the car is in the way, literally. Large areas are pedestrian zone; where you may drive, the kerb space is scarce and lies in the Blue Zone.
That does not mean you cannot book these houses if you are driving. It means you have to settle beforehand where the car will stand for the length of the stay — and that the answer is usually a public car park within walking distance, not the courtyard of the house.
The strategy that works in Graz
Park once, then take the tram. That is not a recommendation made for comfort; it is what the structure of the city points to:
- The Green Zone has no maximum stay and is free of charge on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For a weekend it is the cheapest legal solution in the city.
- The Blue Zone in the centre allows three hours only — it is meant for visits, not for stays.
- Jakominiplatz is the central interchange; from there you reach every corner of the city.
- Park-and-ride sites on the edge of the city hang off the public transport network; which of them are open is with Holding Graz.
Zone boundaries, hours and tariffs are changed by the city. We therefore give the structure and not the amounts — and the sign at the entrance to the zone always takes precedence over this page.
The drive itself
Graz sits on the motorway, and the approaches into the city are unproblematic — the bottleneck only begins inside the Gürtel. Three things that make the difference:
Plan the last two kilometres, not the first two hundred. Satnavs route you the shortest way, and in Graz that tends to end in a lane you are not allowed to enter. Read the hotel’s arrival directions before you set off instead of merely typing in the address.
Watch the clock while you unload. There are loading bays for short stops, but they are scarce, and in the old town often further from the house than you want to walk with luggage. On the Europaplatz in front of the Hauptbahnhof the one-hour restriction applies on top of that.
Do not put the drive home into the late morning if the car is standing in a zone whose charge begins at 9 a.m. It is a small thing, and the commonest reason for a ticket on the last day of a trip.
When a car in Graz really earns its keep
For trips out. The Südsteiermark, the Almenland, Schloss Eggenberg on the western edge of the city — for those a car makes sense. Within Graz it is mostly a cost with a parking search attached.
A realistic plan therefore often looks like this: book a house with a space at the edge of the city, leave the car there, do the city on foot and by tram, and move it only for the trips out.
